Beautiful night for a launch, perfect atmospheric conditions! This shot was taken from Tampa. (Check out these spectacular lightning shots at the launch pad when it was scrubbed earlier this week click here )

Saw this on Flickr–great photo! I live in Sarasota and we drove up to a little farm in Manatee County to watch Discovery go up. It was a beautiful view there, too, the whole sky lit up orange. I saw your other blog on driving up to Space View Park. Launches always seem to get scrubbed when you decide to make the trip up there. The last time we drove there we did see it go up (I think it was Atlantis) but it was on the interstate about twelve miles from the launch site, since traffic was horrible. One day you’ll make it there and it will go up! :]

Thanks for the comment Stephenie
The orange sky effect was very interesting, it holds across all of the shots I’ve seen posted from the launch. Must have been some atmospheric condition I guess.
My wife said she remembered launches like this when she lived in Port Charlotte, lit the whole sky up. She hadn’t seen one like this since she was a kid.
Man, I can’t even imagine driving all the way up there and having it launch when you were 12 miles away….that would kill me!
